World Superbikes 2012 – rider preview

It’s that time of year again. With World Superbikes switching to a single bike rule and both Corser and Haga leaving, here’s Moto Race Reports’ preview of the remaining riders, the newcomers and the switchers. Comments welcome, as usual.

The Dick Dastardly of motorcycle racing returns for what could be his last year at the sharp end. If he doesn’t retire at the end of 2012, there will be a lot of surprised faces. Expect a few wins, but not a championship.

This isn’t the Irishman’s first Aprilia ride, he scored points on a 250cc in 2008, but this could be the year he wins a championship on one. I count him as a serious contender, as long as the factory focusses on supporting him instead of his team-mate. Definitely one to watch.

Returning with the number 7 instead of the 1 he has the right to carry as world champion. This is the last year we’ll see the 1098R in the factory team and it’s a bike at the end of its development cycle. Checa will be at the front, surprising everyone again, but a second championship is not as likely. Wait, you don’t still think Althea isn’t the Ducati factory team, do you?

If you’re asking “Who?” then you’re not alone. Giugliano is the current Superstock 1000 champion, having taken the crown for Ducati and being rewarded with a one-off ride last year where he scored a few points. Don’t expect him to set the racing world alight this year, but he’s no muppet.

Great at qualifying and crashing. With a few podiums last year, he’s still to take a win. Will he finally manage that in 2012? Unlikely, with the quality of riders at the sharp end, but the very likeable Kuba would make his rabid fan base very happy if he did.

The BMW is a remarkable road bike but not one that has won a World Superbike race yet. With Troy Corser, arguably the best super bike development rider in the SBK paddock, retiring last year, it’s up to the second place man to finally put the BMW where it deserves to be. 2011 runner-up Melandri is fast and his underwear model girlfriend brings a touch of glamour to the paddock. I believe Melandri will be giving her bouquets again in 2012.

Tough, determined bulldog Leon Haslam is now a father, but having seen how Ron Haslam brought his children up, I don’t expect his son Leon to slow down any. Again, it’s up to his bike more than him as a rider. If he and his team-mate can get the electronics to finally work, there should be two BMWs getting podiums.

It’s difficult to predict how ex-MotoGP rider and 2009 250cc World Champion Hiroshi Aoyama will adapt to the World Superbike paddock, but he’s got a good bike to get to grips with. Hopefully, his results will be better than his younger brother’s superbike efforts.

More wins for Rea in 2012? Likely.

Just a few years ago, Fabrizio was a race winner and title contender, but he’s now looking like a man in the twilight of his career. As fast as he is, I’d be surprised if he even manages to beat his young team-mate.

In 2010, Badovini took the Superstock series by storm, winning all but one of the races. Last year, he was rewarded with a Superbike ride. He’s a solid mid-pack rider that could break into the front pack with a bit of luck.

PATA last year ran an Aprilia with the now-absent Noriyuki Haga. The year before that, they ran a Ducati for a while then replaced it with an Aprilia. This year, they’re starting with a Ducati. Ex-125 rider Zanetti has just come from Superstock and who knows how he’ll do on an Apr… um, a Ducati.

Hopper has raced in MotoGP, WSBK and BSB. All at the same time. 2011 was a wild year for Hopkins, with his loyalty to Suzuki nearly earning him a MotoGP ride alongside Bautista until Suzuki pulled out of the series entirely. He was runner up in BSB and took pole position in WSBK. Oh and took a few points in MotoGP. Yes, all in the same year. He’s part of a little finger down, but nobody expects this to make a difference. Possible title contender? I think so, and the Crescent Suzuki sounds like one of the best bikes in the paddock, burbling and popping down pit lane, sounding like it’s trying to murder a bag of spanners.

Camier needs the switch to Suzuki to pay off.

If you saw the 2009 BSB championship, you’d wonder why Camier wasn’t WSBK champion already. A tall lad on a bike made for Max Biaggi was never going to do well, especially when his team-mate allegedly went out of his way to hamper him. This year, though, he’s in a team that likes him and speaks the same language. He will keep his team-mate on his toes and could continue to be a regular visitor to the podium.

Effenbert were planning on bringing three or four bikes to the paddock in 2012 and so far, three have been confirmed. Berger is another rider to come up through Superstock racing. As the only man to beat Badovini in 2010, it’ll be interesting to see how his second year on a Ducati goes. Hopefully, his rear wheel won’t explode this time.

MotoGP: A new adventure for WSBK mechanic Tiziano Verniani

During the off season we had the pleasure to meet former Aprilia Alitalia and a mechanic on Max Biaggi’s crew, Tiziano Verniani.

He has been in the paddocks since the late 1990s and was part of some of the most interesting stories in motorsports, such as the debut of the Aprilia RS Cube in MotoGP as well as winning the World Superbike crown in 2010 with the Aprlia RSV4. His experience includes two strokes engines with Honda, Aprlia and KTM in the 250cc series, and the four stroke engines of World Superbike and MotoGP.

Some very interesting things came out from our chat; below are some of the highlights:

Tell us a bit more about yourself: name, job role and major interests.

TV: My name is Tiziano Verniani, I am a general mechanic and my interests are mountain biking and playing percussion.

You won the WSBK title with Max Biaggi in 2010, tell us about that.

TV: It was a really great accomplishment, it was like a dream come true for everyone involved. After some hard work, we have done it and it was a real pleasure. We made it also because there was always a great feeling inside the team, everyone felt it that way. In the end it was such a strong result for Aprilia as well, a new winning project from the very beginning.

You have a lot of experience with motorcycle racing, included being part of the Aprilia RS Cube project in MotoGP. In your opinion what was the best bike to work on?

TV: During my career I worked on both the two stroke engines and the four strokes, so it is very difficult to say which one was the best. For example, the RS Cube was very complex machinery with a lot of effort behind it. Maybe the best was the new RSV4, with which we won the title in WSBK. With the two strokes I made some seasons in the 250 series with Honda, Aprilia and KTM. In this case probably the best one was the Austrian bike, a good compromise between the friendly Honda and the brutal Aprilia.

After strong results in the WSBK series you are now switching to MotoGP with a CRT team: IODA Racing. Tell us more about this very important choice you made for your career.

TV:We are in a very particular time for the MotoGP, as a lot people said this is a transitional time for the series. This will have some advantages in the future, when the new CRT (Editor’s note: Claiming Rule Team) category will be the main one. From the other side, talking about World Superbike, I think the series will use more production material similar to the actual Stock 1000. But if this will be the case, then the mechanic’s role will be less crucial, so this is the reason why I decided to move on and get another challenge.

What will be the base for IODA Racing machinery?

TV:We opted for the Aprilia engine, one that I am familiar with. Aprilia also supplied the chassis project, but not the production itself, to three teams and then each team can give it to a supplier for the delivery. We do not have a direct relationship with Aprilia though, so we decided to make our own strategy and we will manage the chassis project by ourselves and then we will have a team of suppliers to produce it.

Tips and Tricks: What is your opinion on tuning road bikes for track days purposes?

TV:I think the very first thing is the settings. This is very true to make a safer bike to ride with, since nowadays motorbikes are already very fast and with lots of power. So, since the base is already very good you can work on the suspension; this will increase the ride a lot. Then, if someone has the possibility to spend some extra budget they can concentrate on the engine or the brakes as well.

What motorbikes do you own right now?

TV: Now I have two racing bikes, a Honda 125 GP and an Aprilia 125 GP. Both are two strokes, since I am still very fond of this kind of engine. Before, I also had a Ducati 748 and a Yamaha R1 but for now I am still having fun with the little ones.

World Supersport Interview: A Chat with Luca Scassa

After a very good start of the World Supersport season, Luca Scassa from the ParkinGO team did not end where he wished to be at the beginning of this new adventure in the spectacular 600 series. The middle part of the season was crucial for his final standings, and during the last races gained his confidence back and the Italian rider was able to end with some good results. His Supersport team, Yamaha ParkinGO – well managed by former racer Giuliano Rovelli, had a blast of a season, getting both the World Championship with Chaz Davies and the Manufacturers title. Here is what Luca had to share with us:

You finished the season in a good way; after all you had three victories and took the fifth place overall. What are your thoughts on this first World Supersport year?

LS: I had a very good start, maybe because I started very confident while the other riders needed some time to warm up and be fit to battle on each race. Then, by the mid season I had some bad luck and made some mistakes, mostly because I was in a hurry after the Misano disqualification. That was probably the biggest mistake I made during the season, the mentality I had after the Misano race. The good thing is that I learned a lot from this and probably I will not repeat those actions.

It was very nice to see how you celebrated the championship of your teammate Chaz Davies. I think it was a feast for everyone on the team, since ParkinGO really dominated the entire season with a total of nine victories on twelve races.

LS: Yes exactly, it was like that because we all did a great job in the end. Chaz made a great season but also the team was excellent in every single race. I really learned a lot during this first WSS season and I also think Chaz learned something from me, so it was a very profitable exchange.

ParkinGO will be in World Superbike series next year, switching to a new factory with Chaz Davies. How do you see this new adventure?

LS: I am really happy for them; Chaz did exactly what needed to be done staying with them, even though he had some other options with BMW Italia and Suzuki Alstare. It would’ve been my very first choice as well, but for now there is no chance to have two bikes in that team. For now I am still organizing my next season that could be both in WSS or WSBK.

Last thoughts are for Marco Simoncelli, a real talented rider that will be sorely missed after a tragic loss we all witnessed at the Sepang circuit recently.

LS: Yes, it was a real tragic event. Marco was a great rider and a great person. I was not at the funeral but I went the previous day to Coriano on my bike to make my personal farewell. Some people just realized that this is a dangerous sport but we are neither crazy nor immortal because it is just what we love to do. After each single start the thought of not coming back to the pits comes to your mind, and this stays with you also in the very first corner. But is something we need to live with, it is part of our sport.

Carlos Checa won his first Superbike World Championship with a commanding race one win at Magny-Cours. After starting third on the grid he quickly moved up to lead the way, extending his lead with each lap without ever being challenged.

Marco Melandri, who was the only other rider left with a shot at the championship coming in to this round, finished second after a late surge, with Leon Haslam taking third place, just over half a second ahead of Camier.

Yamaha Motor Europe N.V. (YME) has decided to withdraw their official Yamaha World Superbike Team at the end of the current season from the FIM Superbike World Championship.

This announcement follows a full strategic review of the Marketing Operations within Europe including all Motorsport activities and takes into account the continuing severe and rapidly changing Powered Two Wheeler market conditions throughout the region.

Due to this decision more resource and focus will now be used for direct “Customer“ activities to ultimately add more value to Yamaha ownership and increased Customer Satisfaction.

YME would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation for the total commitment, support, and passion shown by the extremely professional and dedicated riders and team members both past and present throughout the many years of participation in the FIM Superbike World Championship. YME would also like to thank all the highly valued business partners and suppliers who have in-turn supported the team and in addition would like to thank Infront Motorsports, the FIM Superbike World Championship promoters. YME has chosen this timing of announcement to ensure that all existing obligations are correctly met, and to not limit any opportunities or future planning for all personnel involved.

Riders Marco Melandri and Eugene Laverty are currently respectively 3rd and 4th in the overall 2011 FIM Superbike World Championship standings for riders with 4 rounds to go. YME and the team will continue to give its maximum efforts until the end of the existing season to try and regain the World Superbike title which Yamaha also won in 2009.

Yamaha will continue the availability of road racing kit parts, known as YEC Racing kit parts, for its R1 and R6 production models for private teams entering at all racing levels.
