What got you involved?

Christin: I first started riding in 2008. I took and passed the MSF course in 2006, but didn’t have a motorcycle I could ride on a regular basis until 2008, when my boyfriend-at-the-time loaned me his salvaged 636. I rode that for 6 months before the engine seized, and went out and bought my current bike; a 2008 CBR600RR 2 days later (I was hooked; I didn’t think I could live without a bike!). What got me interested in motorcycles was just how cool they looked. I rode passenger for a couple years before I started noticing girls riding their own bikes. Then I thought; “That is so cool! I wanna be THAT girl!” So I went and took my MSF course and got a bike!!

Do you also ride on the street, or track only?

Christin: For the first 2 years of owning my CBR, I rode on the street only. I got my first taste of the track at Streets of Willow with TrackXperience in July 2009 and I was hooked. For the next year, I alternated between street and track, but as of July or August of this year, I’m track only. Though if I can find a friend’s bike to borrow, I do ride on the street from time to time.

Describe your experience at the track for the very first time.

Christin: My first experience at the track was a little intimidating. I took the New Rider’s Course (which was required if you’ve never done a track day), and even then I was a little scared. You mean to tell me I can hold this throttle wide open? I don’t think so hahaha… But session after session, I gained more confidence and picked up the pace a little more. I loved the body-positioning clinic they had at one of the classroom sessions; It made me feel more comfortable and confident on my bike.

What do you currently ride, and why did you pick that model bike?

Christin: I ride a 2008 Honda CBR66RR and I picked that model for a couple reasons. First; brand loyalty. All I’ve ever owned were Honda Civics and an Accord. Second; it was more comfortable for me as far as seat height and weight goes. The Kawasakis and Yamahas were really difficult for me to get off the kick stand because of the shape and size of the seat and tank (I’m 5′2″). I didn’t feel confident on them. Everyone and their mom seems to have a Suzuki so I kind of shyed away from that. The Honda seemed like a perfect fit for me. I was surprised at how easy it was to lift it off the kickstand (I actually thought I was going to lose my balance on the other side when I picked it up). Rocking it side to side, easing the weight of the bike from one foot to the other was comfortable as well. I felt confident I could handle the bike.

Craziest track moment?

Christin: Oh man, there’s been a couple. The first that comes to mind is coming into turn 1 too hot. I was riding at Buttonwillow, and was stuck behind this guy on a Daytona 675; he’d pull on me a little bit in the straights, but I’d catch him in the corners but couldn’t find a way around him. So I decided I was going to out-brake him into turn 1, as I noticed he was slowing down early for turns. Well he didn’t want to let up and I came in really hot. Downshifted into 3rd as I passed him on the inside, setting up for the turn, but lost my will to downshift again into 2nd where I needed to be, when my back wheel locked up and started bouncing around. It finally grabbed at the last second and I bogged through the turn in too high of a gear. I made the pass stick though!! Another time, I borrowed one of TrackDaz’s R6’s (you know, the ones you have to sign a ”I-break-I-buy” waiver), and the rear slid out on me a little bit driving out of turn 2. That was the first time that’d happened to me, and I was on a borrowed bike I couldn’t afford to keep so I just prayed I didn’t crash. It only lasted a second and was over before I knew it, but I brought it back to the pits after that!!

Do you think track days affects the way you ride on the streets?

Christin: Definitely. I didn’t really realize how dangerous street riding is compared to the track, so I’ve pulled back a LOT on the street. As my mentor tells me every time I do a street ride; “Save the good stuff for the track.” And I do.

What racing series do you follow?

Christin: Mostly just MotoGP when I get the chance, but I’m getting more and more into AMA and WSBK.

If you could hit the track with any racer past or present, who would it be? Why?

Christin: That’s a toughie, as there are so many girls I look up to. I’d love to hit the track with women racers in the pro-circuit like Melissa Paris or Elena Meyers, but I’d also like to ride with the likes of Christie Cooley, Krystyna Kubran, and Jenny Besaw. I had the chance to ride with Shelina Modera for a few laps in March with Keigwin’s, which was awesome. I also got to ride with Gina Rossi, who was my first instructor at my first track day, which was cool because it was like coming full circle. She was the one who started me on this journey so riding with her is always cool. They’re all girls I look up to so it’d be not only an honor to ride with them, but I know there is a lot I could learn from them, as they do so well in their respective race classes… And of course I’d love to ride with Dani Pedrosa, as he’s my favorite racer.

If you can ride any track in the world, which would it be?

Christin: Laguna Seca is absolutely on my bucket list!

We are seeing more women involved in the racing and motorcycle industry, what are your thoughts on this?

Christin: I absolutely love it!! I love going to track days and linking up and chattin’ it up and riding with other girls that come out. I used to think approaching other women was intimidating, but the girls are the track are in the same boat as you, and they’re friendly. I love getting on the track with my new track buddies (girls) and towing each other around. I also founded and head up an all-girls motorcycle community called GirlClutch (www.GirlClutch.com), and we go out on monthly street rides. There’s something about getting together with other women motorcyclists and talking bikes, racing and technique. It’s different than talking about the same things with your guy friends. There’s like an unspoken, sisterhood and camaraderie there. I don’t really know how to explain it but it’s incredibly empowering.

Are you noticing more women interested in doing track days?

Christin: I do. I actually asked around the group and there are a huge number of women who have never done a track day, but are considering it. I think having an all-girls track day (like Femmemoto or Femmewalla) would really encourage girls to come out and give it a shot.

What advice would you give to anyone just starting out on the track or considering it?

Christin: Do it. Just do it. If you love riding and motorcycles as much as I do, you’re going to fall in love with the freedom of the track. Not having to worry about crap in the road, oncoming traffic, cops, stupid drivers who don’t see you… There’s a million fewer things to stress out about at the track, and you find yourself focusing only on your riding, and having a lot more fun because of it. Even if you’re brand new to it, or think you’re too slow; just do it. Without all those obstacles in the way, and with all the help you can get from instructors and control riders at the track, there are many resources you can use to become more confident and pick up the pace at the track. I don’t think I’ve met a girl yet who came to a track day and was too freaked out not to want to come back again.

Laura: Since 2008.

Have you ever attended races at any level?

Laura: I went to my first MotoGP race last year (2010) at Silverstone. I would love to go to more in the future, especially Laguna Seca.

What got you into motorcycle racing?

Laura: James Toseland got me into motorcycle racing. I have been a little follower of James for quite a while now and he also comes from South Yorkshire. So when I heard that he was moving to MotoGP in 2008, I decided to follow him through his first season and see what this sport was all about. I really enjoyed watching it in 2008 and ever since then, I’ve never missed a race.

  Do you ride yourself?

Laura: I don’t, but would love to learn sometime in the future.

Most memorable experience on a motorcycle or watching bikes?

Laura: The unforgettable battle between Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi at Catalunya in 2009.

Dorna for the day! You control Grand Prix racing the highest level, what would you do or change?

Laura: More bikes on the MotoGP grid, a minimum 25. More and better TV coverage. Cut the winter break to a maximum of 2 months, 2 races in the UK, a race in Indonesia because there is a large following there.

If you could spend the day on the track with any racer (past or present) , who would it be?

Laura: There are so many riders that I follow, but it has to be Jorge Lorenzo!

How and where do you normally watch races?

Laura: At home, live on TV or on my computer. It will normally be the BBC or motogp.com coverage.

Anything you would like to share with the MRR community?

Laura: Without a doubt motorcycle racing is the best sport to watch! Nothing else can come close to it. Also if you’ve got twitter, feel free to follow me @XMissLorenzo99X

Ian McAdam: 1969 suzuki tc120.
Do you also ride on the street, or track only?

IM: Track only .
How did you first get into track days? Do you also race?

IM: I stopped racing in 1991 . I have been racing karts for about 6 years , winning the Rotax Masters California State Championship in 2009 but have given that up also . My first track day was the result of one of my good customers and friend continually badgering me to go out and do a track day with him . I own a small independant shop in Bellflower , CA called Prospeed Motorcycles and one day i traded in a bone stock Ducati 748 . He declared I needed to take it out to Fontana so I picked up some leathers and bought some safety gear and out we went . I should tell you he brought his brother mother and father – he was going to school the old guy, I’m 54 . Long story short it’s like riding a bike, you just do not forget how to do it . He could’nt get within 6 seconds of me! Now I’m hooked and have just sent off my WERA license application . I’ve done 5 track days now and I am loving it . I can not get enough .
Describe how it felt for you to put your bike on the track the very first time.

IM: Pretty nervous pulling out of the pits – was worried I was going to be in peoples way . From the second session on , after I got my knee down for the first time in 20 years I was totally relaxed . I run times that would put me in the middle of the fast group now on a 6 year old GSXR600 beater so I’m happy .

Current track bike?

IM: ‘05 GSXR600, Ducati 916 SPS being built as we speak . I have a ‘85 FZ750 superbike going together slowly because I like old school speed .
If you could hit the track with any racer past or present, who would it be? Why?

IM: Jarno Saarinen – pure genious who died way before his time . For local American talent I’d say Danny Eslick, the way he wrestles a bike into submission and forces it to do his bidding reminds me of the old school superbike racers like Graeme Crosby , Wayne Gardner and Kevin Schwantz before they went to G.P.’s . plus win , lose or draw he just flat out has fun doing what he does!
Craziest track moment?

IM: I remember years ago in a galaxy far away ( New Zealand ) I wanted to buy a TZ350 . The owner brought it out and we agreed I would ride it at the back in a F1 race , unlimited superbike , to see if I wanted it . Damn thing was a bullet and after a couple of laps I was flat out in top down the back straight of Bay Park Raceway . I waited til the last moment then chopped the throttle and hammered the brakes at about 165mph and the damn thing siezed and went sideways! That was scary, going into a 180 degree hairpin . Anyway, the owner was super upset and told me I had wrecked his bike and had to buy it, until a top 2 stroke engine builder pulled it apart in the pits and asked, ” who’s the clown that rebuilt this engine with used wristpin circlips ? ” . Nope – did’nt buy it . Scary though.
Do you think doing track days affects the way you ride on the streets?

IM: Yes absolutely . Every single rider I know that has converted to track days is a better street rider becuase of it . You learn to concentrate to a much greater degree and feel with so much more precision when you ride at speed and close to the edge on the track and those feelings and understanding allows you a greater degree of control and confidence in street riding . A lot of riders also ride slower and more calmly after they do track days, confident in both their and their bikes abilities.

If you can ride any track in the world, which would it be?
IM: The old Spa in Belgium , or maybe Saltzburgring and Nurburgring . The old tracks that Rainey , Lawson et al raced in the 500 heyday .

What advice would you give someone just starting out on the track or considering it?

IM: Buy the absolute best safety equipment you can afford, do not scrimp! Concentrate on understanding your suspension, adjust it systematically and take notes, lots of notes . Buy good Tyres . Be honest about your abilities for your safety as well as other riders . In the short period of time I’ve been doing this I see so many riders riding in the wrong group, riders that just do not have the pace yet their ego dictates they ride in a group they do not have the pace for . This is dangerous for those that do have the pace – they take strange lines and look back for their friends then fall off in strange places . You learn nothing this way and endanger others . This gets worse the faster the group you are in . Ride in the group that has a pace you can ride at comfortably – you will gain confidence and develop pace in safety – and before you know it you’ll be railing thru turn 4 in the fast group and having a ton of fun – which is what its all about!

JD: Absolutely! Since 2003. I currently ride an 2003 Suzuki SV650S. My past bikes were an ‘05 Kawasaki NInja 250 and and ‘06 Kawasaki z750S.

JD: Working at Laguna Seca in 2007. Seeing and hearing the bikes in person was absolutely amazing. Experiencing it live and walking on the track, seeing the racers perform that closely was so awesome. From that point on, I became a fan of MotoGP.

Every Tuesday we take it to the track to feature riders, racers, and track addicts just like you! This week meet, Bruce Henderson also known as @fastasfeck!

First motorcycle?

BH: Wow, first motorcycle, that takes me back, I rode a Bultaco 250 trials bike when I was 12 (off road) but legal riding on road would have been a Honda CBR 125. This bike saw me through my bike test before moving on to the faster stuff. I also had a little 50cc Honda when I was 16 but I wouldn’t describe that as a bike!

Do you also ride on the street, or track only?

BH: I love riding both. I like point to point riding on the roads with a group of mates both in the UK and Europe. It’s just good to get out and go somewhere far away for breakfast early on a summer’s morning.
Track riding though is something else; having the freedom to ride and develop your skills on the same tarmac as the best riders in the world is one of the best things to do in life.

How did you first get into track days? Do you also race?

BH: I first got into track days when I had my motorcycle business. Three of us were in partnership in the business and as a way of testing the bikes we were building we took them to the track.
We also did it purely for fun too and maybe the testing aspect was more of an excuse just to get back to the track. I do not race but it is something I would love to do given more time and money.

Describe how it felt for you to put your bike on the track the very first time.

BH: In the early morning sun, driving a van through the gates of the track at 7a.m. delivers a mixture of pure excitement, adrenaline and nerves.
I have to say from the first pit exit I felt entirely at home, I knew my bike inside out and given the expanse of a track which seemed so big it just all seemed right. It felt like all the talking was over and now was the chance to really step up. I was hooked.

Current track bike?

BH: Yamaha YZF R1 2004, full ohlins, full arrows, fully mapped and upgraded to superstock specification Yum!

If you could hit the track with any racer past or present, who would it be? Why?

BH: There are two, it would have to Valentino Rossi. Valentino to me is an inspiration in both the way he can develop a machine but also to understand his mental approach to racing and his strategy, and focus. I would just love to get inside his head.
Secondly my Dad who is longer here, he was a racer in his time and a massive influence on my life. I would love to have raced him when he was a young man.

Craziest track moment?

BH: I was in the fast group and this group was made up of pro racers testing and also the usual random fast blokes on very fast kit. Unplanned and stupidly I left the garage first and found myself at pole with 30+ racers and general lunatics behind me. I looked back down the line behind me and knew I was in for a right duffing up and was extremely nervous. Green light and out we went, I got my head down and warmed the tyres on the first two laps, so far so good, I carried on making good pace and just kept my head down. This kept going lap after lap until I looked behind me thinking the session had been flagged as no one was there! To my amusement I had managed to pull half a lap on the entire field. This really was crazy as my home built R1 was kicking the pro boys!! I was visited in my garage by a stream of riders wondering who I was. Just goes to show what nerves can do for you.

Do you think doing track days affects the way you ride on the streets?

BH: Yes, definitely. Track days are the best way to learn what your bike can do and also what you can do on your bike. Track days will give you better braking, better cornering and make you more in tune with the machine you are on. What you learn in one track day is worth months of road riding.

If you can ride any track in the world, which would it be?

BH: Laguna Seca – the drop on the cork screw – I like to be scared.

What advice would you give to anyone just starting out on the track or considering it?

BH: It would have to be, DO IT. I think that a lot of riders have a fear of crashing at track days. This is just not the case – pick the group, start as a novice and you will receive excellent tuition and can ride at your own pace. In my experience, all of the track day companies offer excellent first timer tuition and it is a great place to begin. Get your first one under your belt and I can guarantee you will be back again and again.

Davey: Not that long really, the latter parts of 2004 MotoGP season. 2005 was the first one proper and I was hooked into MotoGP, then WSBK & BSB.

Have you ever attended races at any level?

Davey: Yes I attended the last MotoGP at Donington in 2009, Silverstone and Mugello in 2010 and Silverstone again this year, all full weekends. I did The WSBK and BSB at Silverstone in 2010 and so far this year have managed Donington for the WSBK and Brands Hatch and Thruxton for BSB. There will probably be more to come

What got you into motorcycle racing?

Davey:I watched a lot of F1 and was discussing it with a friend Kevin (or Red Kevster as he is sometimes known) when he told me if I wanted to see some real Racing I should watch the motorcycles. He told tales of races past including one rider (not in MotoGP) who’d busted his hand in race 1 of a weekend and ridden race 2 with a spanner taped across his glove. I thought it all sounded very far fetched until I started watching. Add to that the amazing, informative and enthusiastic commentary of Toby Moody and Julian Ryder and how could I not get hooked? I should also say that Mrs Wavey enjoys it all as much as me and a hobby shared is so much more enjoyable (and it makes Birthday presents so much easier)

Do you ride yourself?

Davey: Amazingly for someone who watches so much Racing I do not hold a car or bike license. I think about getting on a bike sometimes but I also notice just how many leather clad fans limp when I’m at the races.

Most memorable experience on a motorcycle or watching bikes?

Davey: It has to be Mugello. The most amazing track for fans, views and backdrop. Remember the sun hat though (ouch)

Is there a track that you would like to see MotoGP race at that is currently not on the calendar?

Davey: I’d love to see MotoGP bikes careering around Brands Hatch. Paddock hill would be mega exciting. Give me oodles of cash though and I’ll clean up and rebuild Donington for you and make it the track it should be, I think the track is amazing but the facilities and view points have gone from bad to worse sadly.

Dorna for the day! You control Grand Prix racing the highest level, what would you do or change?

Davey: Oh Lots. I’d establish an obligatory riders safety meeting like F1 has. The storm around Simoncelli has just got ridiculous. Much as I admire Lorenzo as a rider I’m afraid the famous “handbags” press conference smacked of mind games. It certainly added to the pressure in Marcos mind and the collision with Jorge was almost a self fulfilling prophecy. A serious conversation behind closed doors with all riders would have been a much calmer approach and could have led to a different outcome. What have Dorna done to calm things down? Put Dani and Marco in the same press conference at Mugello the numptys, do they want someone to get hurt or more to increase ticket sales? I’d do anything to get more bikes on the Grid. BSBs attempts with the EVO class (a race within a race allowing a less expensive way into the premier class) leads to a full grid and some of the best racing I’ve seen. I’d keep 125s as they seem a great way to bring young riders in. Run the american GPs back to back to allow all classes to run. Much as I like some of the BBC presenters I don’t think the Beeb itself gives MotoGP the scheduling it deserves so I’d restore live broadcasts to British Eurosport

Finally, much as I love the guy I’d concentrate a little less attention on Rossi. Dorna hedge all their bets on him and they are in danger of losing fans when he finally goes. The sport is bigger than the man

If you could spend the day on the track with any racer (past or present) , who would it be?

Davey: Despite the above it would have to be Valentino. It would just be interesting to see a little behind the public persona and it would be fascinating to watch how his crew operates and be inside that bubble watching the hysteria of the fans.

How and where do you normally watch races?

Davey: Lets just say the couch has some deep indentations, the fridge gets a lot of use and the Sky Box knows the Eurosport channels best of all.

Anything you would like to share with the MRR community?

Davey: You can find me talking nonsense on twitter as @waveydavey001 you can see my Motorcycle Junkies ‘newspaper’ Click here and I share a calendar of MotoGP, WSBK, BSB & other bike races Click here which will be updated for 2012

We’re hitting the pavement hard with our next track enthusiast – Meet our Track Tuesday rider straight from the Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. Rachael Westfall!

When did you first start riding a motorcycle? What got you involved?

RW: Both my parents rode motorcycles when I was kid. I rode with my Dad on his VMax for the first time when I was 4 years old and got my first dirt bike when I was 9 years old. My Dad was a little more hesitant than my mom when I decided I wanted a street bike though. Mom just said, “Make sure you put 3,000 miles on something small and take the MSF class, then you can get the sport bike you want.” My mom was an MSF instructor, so naturally that’s the advice she gave. So that’s what I did. I started on a Buell Blast, then bought a 2000 Yamaha R6 as soon my odometer hit 3K.

Do you also ride on the street, or track only?

RW: I work for Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A., so I get to borrow bikes and do some testing here and there for work. As a result, I keep riding on the street. Otherwise, I ride on the track a lot (about twice a month). If I didn’t have bikes to borrow, I probably wouldn’t ride on the street anymore.

Describe your experience at the track for the very first time.
RW: My first time at the track was at Willow Springs with Fastrak Riders back in 2002. It was scary. I was so inimidated with all those guys in full leather suits sitting out in the hot pit lane with their game faces and loud exhausts. I looked at the instructors wearily when they motioned for me to ride out there with them. I was a canyon squid back then and thought I was hot stuff. But riding out there on that black serpentine ribbon of uninhibited tarmac taught me that I didn’t know as much as I thought I did. I don’t think I started to grow as a rider until I finally did my first track day.

What do you currently ride, and why did you pick that model bike?

RW: I currently own a Kawasaki ZX-10R, which is track-only. I’ve always loved one liters for their power and ability to make me giggle like a five-year-old girl. Yes, they’re ridiculous machines that are unecessary and more than any one person can master. But schnikes, they are so much fun! It’s such a blast to pass people on the straight at the track and to scare myself senseless while braking into turn 1. It’s the ultimate rush. My Kawi is really a handful though. I’m just hanging on most of the time and it takes a quite a bit of upper body strength to pull that beast up out of the corners. I originally chose that model because it happened to the be the one I spent the most time on for work and I was most familiar with it’s handling, braking characteristics and power. I love it. It’s a job to ride it, but it makes me love to work.

Craziest track moment?

RW: I had the chance to ride at Road America for an endurance race in 2007. I was on a bone stock borrowed Suzuki SV650. I struggled with that thing because I was only used to riding inline 4’s. I was hitting false neutrals and sliding the back tire coming out of every turn. I had a hard time with that bike. lol Well, during the race, this bloke on a yellow R6 pulls in front of me, slows down, turns around and gives me ‘The Matrix’ wave, as if to say, “You can’t catch me,” then he takes off. I was furious because I had that SV pinned in top gear and couldn’t so much as breathe his dust. If I ever catch that bastard…

Do you think track days affects the way you ride on the streets?

RW: Yes, definitely. But how it affects you is entirely up to you. It either makes you more agressive by teaching you to ride close to other riders and stay on the gas longer, or it makes you less agressive because you see the street as not a worthy place to ride like an idiot. For me, riding at the track has taken a lot of the steam out of my street riding. These days, I only ride in the canyons every once in a blue moon and if I do, I’m usually riding at a comfortable pace. I’m too old to dive bomb into blinde, shaded corners these days.

What racing series do you follow?

RW: I don’t have a T.V. so I don’t really ‘follow’ any racing. But I do love to sit and watch the races with my buddies at viewing parties every once in a while. It’s always a treat to catch a Moto GP or World Superbike round. Rossi’s victory interviews always make me laugh.

If you could hit the track with any racer past or present, who would it be? Why?

RW: This is a great question! So many to choose from, but I’ll be honest. I’m a die hard Nicky Hayden fan. What moto chick in her 20’s isn’t? The man is adorable and he has so much heart, which shows when he races. He’s motivated me to try and be a better rider. If I could just follow him around the track for a few laps, I’d die one happy lady.

If you can ride any track in the world, which would it be?

RW: I’d ride Isle of Man. It’s sort of a track right? Isle of Man is a mystic place and I think I’m more in awe of those crazy riders than any other rider in the world. It takes a special person to take the chances they do, to trust your machine like they do and to memorize such a labyrinth of crowded streets and alleys in just a few days before the race. I have to try it.

We are seeing more women involved in the racing and motorcycle industry, what are your thoughts on this?

RW: I think it’s awesome. The coolest thing about this is not only that there are more women, but the fact that we’re all open and supportive of one another. When I first started riding, it was so much about proving yourself to the boys, most women riders were snotty and unapproachable. This isn’t the case anymore. You can walk up to any girl in the pits and ask for advice or just shoot the breeze. Chances are you’ll leave with a new friend. To see this interaction almost brings tears to my ears sometimes, just because I know how far we’ve come. Just look at Elena and Melissa, to name a few. Wow!

Are you noticing more women interested in doing track days?

RW: Yes! I’ve noticed a lot more ladies at track days. In the old days, you were lucky if you saw 2 or 3 girls at a track day. Now? There are at least 15-20. Amazing!

What advice would you give to anyone just starting out on the track or considering it?

RW: Don’t be scared. Take a new rider school and please, ask questions. The instructors are more than willing to help, whether it be finding you a tool to change your tire or showing you around the track. We’re all more than happy to help because we’re one big riding family!

RC: Around two and a half years.

Have you ever attended races at any level?

RC: No, but I hope to get to Phillip Island this year.

What got you into motorcycle racing?

RC: Well to be honest, insomnia. Before 2010 MotoGP was shown in Australia by delayed telecast, so I was flicking through the channels, very late at night/early in the morning, when I came across a motorbike race, I always liked to watch motorbike racing if I came across it, but never sought it out. They were following Valentino Rossi around the track and then switched to Casey Stoner; I was amazed by his riding style (and still am to this day) and even more surprised when they said he was Australian as I had never heard of him (surprising for a sports mad nation). I can’t even remember who won that race, but it was enough to pique my interest and I decided to watch the next race. It did not take long to get hooked as, the racing is great, you can immerse yourself in the world of gathering statistics and bits of information when there is no racing, and the online MotoGP community is vibrant, funny, opinionated and exciting to be a part of.

Do you ride yourself?

RC: I grew up in the country so I did a little dirt bike riding as a kid, but as a city living adult my only riding experience has been as a passenger.

Most memorable experience on a motorcycle or watching bikes?

RC: I was driving to my parents’ home one night when my taillights went out; I was on a lonely country road that trucks like to drive at high speed. These two motorbike riders appeared out of nowhere, seeing my taillights were out one of them drove behind me and the other one in front all the way home, they made sure my car stayed visible from behind. That was a pretty memorable experience, especially considering I didn’t realise what they were doing at first and it totally freaked me out! As far as racing goes, there are too many amazing moments to pick just one.

Is there a track that you would like to see MotoGP race at that is currently not on the calender?

RC: No, I have not been watching long enough to have seen the “classic” tracks in action, so I don’t miss them.

Dorna for the day! You control Grand Prix racing the highest level, what would you do or change?

RC: As the grand dictator of Grand Prix racing for a day, I would: 1) Advertise, advertise and do more advertising, especially in markets that remain largely untapped, 2) remove the fuel limit, or increase it – I don’t think many fans like seeing a race won or lost on fuel consumption, 3) Allow greater distribution of free racing footage and other human interest pieces on social networking sites, youtube etc – letting fans advertise for you seems to be part of most successful organisations marketing plans. 4) Make pre-race rider meetings mandatory 5) Make race directions more accountable and transparent by publishing findings on incidents that have been penalised.

If you could spend the day on the track with any racer (past or present), who would it be?

RC: For a fun day, definitely Colin Edwards, at his boot camp…where the basics of riding and shooting are taught, both things I would like to try at least once.

How and where do you normally watch races?

RC: I either watch races on television, via free-to-air OneHD, they broadcast QP and the race live, the pre-race show is also excellent; alternatively I watch online via MotoGP subscription.

Anything you would like to share with the MRR community?

RC: If you feel like following me on twitter I can be found @makeanincision , be warned I do love to make bad jokes, state my opinion and tweet about things I have found interesting to read or view…my tweeting is pretty exclusive to MotoGP.

When did you first start riding a motorcycle? What got you involved?

Darius Khashabi: I started riding when I was 12 on a yz 80. I didn’t get to ride much back then and didn’t get my 1st streetbike till I was 24, a 1998 Ducati 748.

Do you ride street also or track only?

DK: I used to ride on the street a lot but rarely do anymore. It’s much more fun on the track and way safer. Occasionally I’ll take a rip up to the Berkeley Hills.

Describe your experience at the track for the very first time.

DK: My 1st track day was in 2000 when I had 1st bought my 00 R1. It was pretty scary, I hadn’t been riding a street bike for long at that point. I was used to going around the track in a car or go kart and I didn’t have much confidence on the bike. I ended up getting more interested in stunt riding and didn’t get back on the track till late 2010.

What do you currently ride, and why did you pick that model bike?

DK: I’ve been riding my 2009 R1 the most. I’ve always liked the R1’s and this new model is bad ass! It may not make the most HP but the motor is awesome and has tons of torque and personality.

Craziest track moment?

DK: I went off the track turn 9 at T Hill going pretty damn fast, luckily it was fairly smooth and I steered it back on track.

If you walked into your dream garage, what would you see?

DK: A formula 1 car, moto gp bike, lots of dirtbikes, supermoto bikes, stunt bikes, Viper ACR, Corvette Zr1, a couple Ferrari’s FXX’s I could go on and on.

What racing series do you follow?

DK: WSB, MotoGP, XDL

If you could hit the track with any racer past or present, who would it be? Why?

DK: I’d hit the track with Rossi. He’s got a lot of experience over the years and could teach me a lot.

If you can ride any track in the world, which would it be?

DK: Id’ like to ride or drive the Nuremberg Ring in Germany, or Phillip Island in Australia.

How do you prep yourself before a track day?

DK: I run during the week, do some cycling and hit the gym.

Do you prefer doing stunts or track days?

DK: I’ve always been a track rat since I did my 1st track day in a car when I was 17. I’ve been stunt riding a lot for the last 12 years so it’s fun to get back on the track and do a new style of riding again.

What advice would you give to anyone just starting out on the track or considering it?

DK: Get yourself a good set of Alpinestars leathers and be safe.

Em Alicia: My first ride was a 2008 Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200 Low, which I bought late September 2009. My lifelong dream of owning and riding an American Legend fulfilled at the expense of a car. That bike almost made me quit riding altogether, when my rear tire broke traction on stray gravel while I was executing a left-hand turn at an intersection. I managed to save it by getting on the throttle. For two weeks after I was mortified every time I had to gear up for the ride to work. I had little choice; I had to work through it. Seven months into my two-wheeled adventure I parked the Hog and bought myself a 2009 Suzuki Hayabusa, which is the bike that gave me life as a real “ride or die” moto-chick: Miss Busa, my crazy alter-ego, was born.

Do you also ride on the street, or track only?

Em Alicia: My bike is my primary form of transportation. I ride year-round. I commute on my bike; I enjoy touring with my husband; I enjoy the occasional romp through the mountains two hours north of where I live. And I love the track; curvy, straight, it doesn’t matter much, it’s all good.

How did you first get into track days? Do you also race?

Em Alicia: I’ve never been one to do things “the proper way.” When I get an idea in my head, which compels me, I jump right in. Balls to the wall. If I think too long about something, I’ll talk myself right out of it. Last year my hubby gave me the best birthday present ever: a slot in the Kevin Schwantz School at Barber Motorsports Park. Six months later, I completed the Ed Bargy Racing School at JenningsGP, followed by my very first open track day, which I ran in the Intermediate Group. It was a free-for-all. They had a total of 27 crashes that weekend, but rather than being scared, I found myself thriving, further feeding the addiction. My inaugural WERA race came six weeks later.

Describe how it felt for you to put your bike on the track the very first time.

Em Alicia: Exciting. Scary. Exhilarating. Educational. Confidence inspiring. My first time on the track was with one of the school’s bikes, a GSX-R600. I had never been on a 600 before and I was a little nervous riding an unknown machine in an unknown setting, not to mention I was the only woman there, which really put the pressure on. I couldn’t let my sisters down, now could I? I had to represent. Once I let the clutch out and exited pit road, all my worries and fears were forgotten. The GSX-R is just a baby Hayabusa. It felt oddly familiar. It took two laps and I was having the time of my life, the lap after that I was itching to pass the instructor and set a slightly quicker pace. Yeeeeeooow!

Current track bike? What made you decide?

Em Alicia: I have a 2010 BMW S1000RR. I love that machine. It’s a precision missile. Predicable, controllable, agile, and it’s quick! The Germans definitely took stupid fast to the next level. Why the S1000RR? Simple, my husband left me no choice. I blame him. After crashing my Hayabusa, he refused to buy me another one. He said I needed a “proper sportbike that fit my ‘life begins at 45 degrees’ riding style”. I had been secretly lusting over BMW’s new superbike, which was irresistibly beautiful in its design; sexy and geeky all at the same time. Everything I loved about the ‘Busa, wrapped up in a tidy little flick-able package. I had an answer ready for him. He groaned and took me to have a test ride.

However, I am seriously considering looking for a dedicated race bike, so the Double-R can resume its street duties full-time once more. I would love nothing more than to continue racing my S1000RR. I have to (shamefully) admit that I get a bit of a kick out of being the only woman in my part of the world who rides one. And the more guys tell me the bike’s not the right bike for me, the harder I work to show them how clean the inside of my Beemer’s tailpipe still is after over 15,000 miles. But then reality kicks in and I float back down to earth: the reality of it being financially unsustainable for me to race it, unless I had some industrial-strength sponsorship.

If you could hit the track with any racer past or present, who would it be? Why?

Em Alicia: Burt Munro. I know, I know. He wasn’t a roadracer, he was a land speed racer. But he’s the one with whom I would want to “get my speed on.” It would be so awesome to hang at Bonneville with him, talk shop and give her hell on the salt. He is my hero. His story is the reason why I didn’t give up and instead just went for it. He’s the reason I race. I prefer the curves, but I have LSR aspirations, too.

If it had to pick a roadracer, it would have to be il Dottore, Valentino Rossi. His riding style is perfection, his skill legendary. The man would have to stay in first gear though, and steer with only his throttle hand. Better yet, I’d rather ride two-up with him at GP speeds, after I take a Xanax, that is.

Craziest track moment?

Em Alicia: Happened at Barber Motorsports Park, in the Museum Corner. I was duking it out for about four laps with two other riders during a Solo Race. We kept trading positions back and forth, almost every turn. I had just fought pretty hard to regain my position in the lead by getting the inside line on both of them in Charlotte’s Web (Turn 5), which is a downhill, decreasing radius, negative camber, double-apex turn. I cut in hard to the inside when I saw them go a little wider than usual, which required me to brake for a second time and make a mid-corner correction to lay in a new course. My suspension setup didn’t like that change in plans too much and with a slight wobble, I dropped in under them at the first apex and then stuck to the left curb like glue, off the race line, basically following the edge of the track all the way around into Turn 6. I had to get on the throttle like a maniac, because they were gaining on me pretty quickly. I popped my first ever baby power wheelie exiting a turn under acceleration (Wooohoooo!) when exiting Turn 6, cresting the hill into the middle straight. There are some ripples in the pavement there on the left-hand third of the track. That probably helped. I don’t care. It freakin’ counts! Anyway, we had a little power struggle on the short straight, in which I managed to defend my position by employing the “she with the biggest bike wins” technique. Cheater! Yeah. Well, I work with what I’ve got. No shame in my game (for the most part). These shenanigans led to me screaming into Turn 7 way faster than I had ever dared previously. I went wide and missed my intended target, the left-hand curb between Turns 7 and 8, by about a foot or two. As soon as I realize where I’m headed I wrestle the bike back upright and stand up on my pegs, because the Missus is going to do a little off-roading. The bike bounces over the curb, grass flying everywhere. I am amazed that I’m still upright. I also wonder if I’m going to get meatballed for taking a little shortcut. I actually have to break my wonder-induced trance so I can concentrate on getting back onto the racing surface. No sign of the two racers behind me in my peripheral vision. As soon as I’m back on the track and enter Turn 8 from an unusual angle of approach I get a leg cramp in my right calf muscle. Crap! My inside foot slips off the peg. I instantaneously clamp down on the bike’s frame with the heel of my outside leg and pull my inside leg up before the toe slider even hits the pavement. Now what? I’m going wide again, because at the moment I’m too preoccupied to steer. “Do NOT pull yourself up by the handlebars!” I scream the command to myself in my head. I see the left curb getting progressively closer. I need to be back on this bike before I get there! Now I’m hanging ON to the bike rather than OFF of the bike. My right foot is still not back on the peg. I quickly wiggle my fingers to make sure I’m loose on the grips. I pull myself back onto the middle of the seat by my left leg and core muscles. My right leg is screaming bloody murder as I pull it back onto its accustomed position on the peg. Just in time, too. With a quick little nudge on the bars I’m back in control and in line. They’re still behind me? Wow! Then again, I wouldn’t have passed myself either, after the stunt(s) I just pulled. One of them screams past me in Turn 9. I have what? Eight more laps to go. Time to just concentrate on finishing this thing. The other one says goodbye to me on the back straight. I get another cramp coming out of Turn 15 onto the front straight. This time it’s my left leg. Every lap I want to pit in. Every lap I make myself pass the exit to pit road and keep going. I am tired and in pain. I finished 15th of 16. Somebody crashed out.

Do you think doing track days affects the way you ride on the streets?

Em Alicia: Yes. I have become a better, more confident and most importantly, a safer street rider. It’s a double-edged sword for me though. Street riding bores me to tears anymore and I have to make a conscious effort to keep my speed somewhat under control, since everything seems so deceptively slow. I’m definitely less of a mountain squid now. Long gone are the days when I tried to get my knee down on some deserted stretch of curvy back road. I have calmed down a lot since I started riding on the track. Having crashed once on the street and twice on the track, I think I’m onto something here when I say that I’ll keep the craziness where it belongs, at Barber, Turn One.

If you can ride any track in the world, which would it be?

Em Alicia: I have no preference. Each track comes with its own set of challenges, and they all are more or less unique. It’s a lot of fun to learn a new track. The process shows me where my weak skills are hiding; it makes kinks that have crept in for one reason or another blatantly obvious. Sometimes it just takes me longer to “get it.” A grumpy “this track sucks” in the morning can turn into an enthusiastic “this track rocks” by afternoon. I’ll just have to try and ride as many as I possibly can.

Not a racetrack, but I would love to race the Isle of Man TT. That would be the adventure of a lifetime! The stuff this girl’s dreams are made of.

We are seeing more women involved in the racing and motorcycle industry, what are your thoughts on this?

Em Alicia: The more the merrier! Women bring a different perspective into the industry. We have some very different challenges to face when riding or racing; when shopping for gear, or while trying to find that “perfect” bike that fits our personality, our style, and our bodies. Our riding philosophy and skill development and progression differs in some aspects from that of the men. I would love to see more women getting involved in the sport; I believe that women would be a valuable asset to both, the racing world and the industry as a whole. I do my best to encourage women who are thinking about learning to ride. Maybe if there are enough of us, they’ll start making better protective gear for women and we’ll get umbrella boys. Besides, it’s lonely in the literbike class. C’mon girls, grip it and rip it! =D

What advice would you give to anyone just starting out on the track or considering it?

Em Alicia: Do it! My personal recommendation is to take a track/race school first. Get some professional instruction in a safe and controlled (not to mention fun) environment without the added pressure of “having to keep up.” Learn the basics of motorcycle control and dynamics and traction management. Then do some track days and have a blast while practicing what you’ve learned and building your skill set. The track is a great confidence builder, can make you a better street rider, and you get to meet more likeminded people “who get it.” A track day is also cheaper than a shrink and way more effective.

On May 10th, 2011 James Heaney began his 24,000 mile adventure to raise money for the charity War Child. At the end of this trip, he will become the youngest person from the UK to do a solo circumnavigation of the world by motorcycle.

ANY CHARACTER HERE

I had the chance to interview James about his upcoming trip.

How long have you been involved with motorcycles?

James Heaney: I’ve actually only been riding properly for 18 months, and for 6 months of that I was off with a broken leg. Before that the only time I’d ever ridden was when I was on holiday in France, where I rode a 1976 Honda 50. It was great! Had to pedal along to start the bike, which I think I’d struggle to do with mine which weighs a little more than a Honda 50!

What inspired the idea of riding around the world as a fundraiser?

JH: It was actually after breaking my leg. I was nervous about getting on a bike again. I mean, I’d only been riding for a month before getting knocked off and I didn’t want to have to go through that pain again. But being sat at home watching Long Way Round and reading Ted Simon’s Jupiters Travels I started to get inspired, and it just escalated from there.

How did you plan the route? When did the planning start?

JH: I started planning about a year ago. I began by researching into each country, seeing the ins and outs of going there with a motorcycle and seeing what the general advice was from the foreign country, and gradually a route started to become apparent.

Tell us about your charity. Why is it important to you?

JH: War Child are a fairly small charity but they have big ideas and do fantastic work. They work in really tough environments like all of our soldiers do at the moment, and with children which I think everyone cares about.

How will the money that is being raised benefit War Child?

JH: The money I raise will help keep the projects on going that they are doing in Afghanistan, Iraq, the Congo, and Uganda. They do lush things with the children too, like music and sports which I believe they’ll value much more.

Are you looking forward to any specific stop during your 24,000 ride?

JH: Every little part is going to be exciting to me, because it’s all new. What I’m looking forward to most is Kazakhstan because so many people know so little about the country, Russia because it’s such a vast and fascinating place, and also Route 66 in USA, but I don’t think that needs ant reason!

How have you prepared for unfavorable weather conditions and breakdowns?

JH: Weather I haven’t done a lot for, I’m an all weather biker anyway so I’m not too fussed. For breakdowns I’ve got the basic cables, fuses, bulbs, brake pads etc, just enough to limp it to a garage if necessary.

Wishing you a safe and successful trip, James! Is there anything else you would like to share with the MRR community?

JH: Just like to say thanks to everybody’s support. It’s really going to make all the difference. And let’s keep spreading the word around!

AM: Since shortly after I started riding bikes in 1987. Eddie Lawson won the 500GPs that year. Was a great time to get into moto racing

Have you ever attended races at any level?

AM: Yes, I’ve attended races at almost every level. I helped out my friend Steve when he was racing his RD400 in Earlystocks at the club level, British and American National Championship levels, and up to World Superbikes and Grand Prix. It’s all good, at every level. Obviously the sheer spectacle of world championship level racing is exciting and impressive, but even the weekend warriors at club level racing are fun to watch. The sounds and smells of the racetrack. It’s a beautiful thing. My fondest recollections of a racing event would be going to the GPs up at Donington Park in the 90s. Donny is one of the best spectator circuits I’ve been to. The fans are mental, the atmosphere is pure anarchy. They were riotous weekends.

What got you into motorcycle racing?

AM: It was a natural extension of riding. All my riding buddies were into the racing too. I went to my first race, a British Superbike meet at Brands, and I was smitten.

Do you ride yourself?

AM: Yes, a Suzuki TL1000R. After a 15 year hiatus I got back into riding in 2010, and I’m loving it every bit as much as I did when I first started. Although my next bike will have to be a sports tourer as my aging back cannot handle the stance of a pure sports bike anymore.

Most memorable experience on a motorcycle or watching bikes?

AM: So many good memories (and few horrific ones) around bikes – first big bike, first long distance tour to Wales, first track day. But one of the greatest trips we did was ride up to Assen for the Dutch TT in 1988 or 89. There were 8 bikes, GSXRs and FZRs and we stayed at a resort somewhere in Holland, who knows. Harderwijk I think. The racing was pretty good, but the trips into Amsterdam were better. The World Cup was on so there were stoned footie (soccer) fans lining the streets in the bars and coffee shops. It was a wild week.

Is there a track that you would like to see a MotoGP race at that is currently not on the calender?

AM: I miss some of the classic old circuits, I wish we could revisit some of these: Hockenheim, Salzburgring, Anderstorp, Welcom, Paul Ricard, Interlagos, Jarama, Imola, Spa. I’m sure these circuits don’t meet modern safety requirements which is why we dont go there any more, but I wish they could be upgraded. I don’t think Spain needs 4 GPs, and despite how good the a grand prix bike looks under lights, I just don’t understand the business rationale behind the Qatar race. I don’t see any need to hold any race in the middle east. Indo-Asia I can understand, Arabia I do not.

You control Grand Prix racing the highest level, what would you do or change?

AM: Remove the 21 litre fuel limit. Remove engine size limitations. Remove the use of spec tyres. Allow for the use of turbo-charged small displacement engines, up against fire-breathing monster engines. Allow the use of two-strokes. Remove GPS data from electronic engine management, but allow for wheelie control, limited wheel sensor traction control. I’d like the blue ribbon class to be an anything goes, build what you can and let the best riders have at it. I would also like to bring parity to the classes, so maybe the big class would become a super GP Formula One class, and introduce a Moto1 class that mirrors Moto2 and Moto3. Spec CBR1000 engines, no T/C, bespoke chassis, spec tire, spec ECU.

I’d make it cheaper to subscribe to the annual package, I’d entice new users to the web not turn them off with greedy monopolistic tactics. I’d extend an invitation to work with InFront instead of being adversarial with them. I’d try to grow the sport of motorcycle racing through grass roots marketing and outreach programs instead of sitting back and riding the Rossitrain until it runs dry. i would like to see new rider development programs supported in other nations outside of Spain and the Buckler CEV 125PP/moto3 and moto2 classes to be benchmarks worldwide I’d get Richard Branson to invest to fund it all

AM: Would have to be my boyhood hero Barry Sheene, and I’d be on with him and King Kenny and I’d sit back and watch them duke it out from the best seat in the house.

How and where do you normally watch races?

AM: Online, pilfering streams of video wherever I can find them. Sadly motorcycle racing in the US is a bit of a joke, and the coverage of it even more so. Finding a choppy pixelated 400×300 video stream of Eurosport or BBC on the web is far preferable to listening to the muttonheads on Speed.

AM: If you can tolerate my endless blathering drivel you can follow me on twitter as @influxx. There is such a strong healthy community on the Tweescape of moto fans and its been fun making new friends and talking bikes.

Monica Lee Paige (@Monicaleepaige) is a successful international cover model and Playboy model who loves to hit the track on her GSX-R. Here’s what Monica had to say about her experiences at the track, and some added advice for anyone who is thinking about getting involved in track days!

When did you first start riding a motorcycle? What got you involved?

Monica Lee Paige: My first bike was an old Suzuki RGV250 which I bought when I was 17. I had the Suzuki a couple of years before I upgraded to an Aprilia RS250. I was introduced to motorcycles growing up in rural Australia. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to ride quads bikes (Yamaha Big Bears) on our property from quite a young age, before I could even reach the foot pegs! I am now married to American stunt rider – Darius Khashabi (www.servinitup.com) and bikes are continue to be a huge part of my life today.

Do you also ride on the street, or track only?

MLP: Yes I ride street. Although I have been riding on the streets for over 9 years, I only just recently attended my first track day in late 2010. I have been addicted ever since!

Describe your experience at the track for the very first time.

MLP: My first track day was last year through Zoom Zoom Trackdays (www.zoomzoomtrackdays.com) at Thunderhill Raceway CA. I was so excited I couldn’t sleep the night before. The Novice classroom sessions were extremely helpful with everything including- track overview, lines, brake markers, body positioning & bike setup. The staff and instructors were all extremely helpful which helped ease the nerves. After the first lap of the second session (the first session was spent following an instructor) I was hooked! I rode every session and couldn’t wait to get back out there each time. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t done this sooner! Trackdays in Australia aren’t as easily accessible with racetracks few and far between.

What do you currently ride, and why did you pick that model bike?

MLP: I ride an 05 Suzuki GSXR 600. It has a few small mods including full titanium Akrapovic exhaust system & Power Commander mapping. I didn’t actually have my heart set on a Suzuki, however Darius told me about a friend who was selling his mint 05 GSXR 600 with very low mileage for great price. I was still not really keen on the idea of a Suzuki, however as soon as I layed eyes on and rode it – I was sold, my first 4 stroke! I have had it for 3 years now and considering an upgrade in the near future.

Craziest track moment?

MLP: Getting my knee down for the first time would have to be my craziest track moment. It was at Buttonwillow Raceway CA at a Letsride Trackday (www.letsridetrackdays.com) I was so happy when it finally happened, I had to remind myself to focus on the track ahead. I was smiling for days afterward. As for crazy-hairy situations, I have come pretty close to coming off the track once or twice but nothing major to date.

Do you think track days affects the way you ride on the streets?

MLP: It certainly has in the form of confidence, however I find my desire to ride on the street is becoming less and less the more I attend track days. It just hardly seems worth battling with the dangers of traffic and law enforcement when trackdays offer an environment free of both.

What racing series do you follow?

MLP: MotoGP, World Superbike, Australian Superbike, Brittish Superbike, Isle of Man TT

If you could hit the track with any racer past or present, who would it be? Why?

MLP: Mick Doohan. Because he is a legend!

If you can ride any track in the world, which would it be?

MLP: Phillip Island in my homeland of Australia. I only started riding track days here in America and never had the chance to ride Phillip Island while living in Australia. It’s certainly a goal of mine in the future one day when I return for vacation.

We are seeing more women involved in the racing and motorcycle industry, what are your thoughts on this?

MLP: I think it is fantastic! Seeing the likes of WERA Superstock Champion Krystyna Kubran and talented young female AMA SS Racer, Elena Myers racing (& winning) against the guys in the sport is certainly an inspiration to me on the track. I am also involved in the stunt riding scene which currently features some extremely talented female riders. The XDL Show www.xdlshow.com have the Sartso Women’s Cup as a part of the touring stunt riding series and the female competitors are killing out there, holding their own and earning major respect.

Are you noticing more women interested in doing track days?

MLP: Yes definitely. The last track day I attended at Infineon Raceway CA, not only were there several women riding in B & A group but there was also a couple of ladies in C who were attending their very first track day!

What advice would you give to anyone just starting out on the track or considering it?

MLP: Do it, but be prepared – you will be addicted! I highly recommend attending any of the classroom sessions offered for C group. They are usually complimentary and offer valuable information about the track, cornering, braking, body positioning and more. Instructors are there to help you so if you are unsure about anything or simply want to improve on your riding style, they are often a great help so don’t be afraid to ask! See you on the track!

MD: Watching the 2004 Donnigton Park GP in the pouring rain with my Mum with our fingers crossed, biting our fingernails as Rossi was saving High sides left and right and to finish 1st! Epic.

With the announcement of MotoGP going to Texas, this opens up the possibility of there being three US rounds, what are your thoughts as a US based fan?

MD: Having 3 rounds in the U.S will be huge success for the sport but a huge fail on my bank account

Dorna for the day! You control Grand Prix racing the highest level, what would you do or change?

MD: GP would have 2 races at each round just like WSBK and a global MotoGP TV channel.

MD: At home on my computer with my family.

MD: I’ve have been lucky to of had the opportunity to meet some really cool people thanks to MotoGP, people that I now consider friends and have helped me in the high of times and the low of times of life but are always there if ever needed. A huge thanks to MRR! Shout out to MotoGpJunkies, you guys are awesome!

First motorcycle?

Marianne: I literally had no idea how to ride when I walked into the Suzuki dealership. So what did I do? I bought a black and purple 1994 Suzuki Katana 600 with 7 miles on it, right off the floor. I had only been on the back before that so we trucked it home. My first impromptu lesson resulted in my dropping it within the first minute and popping off a mirror. I eventually learned and put a lot of miles on that bike! Unfortunately, my Katana had been stolen and returned so many times until one day they never found it again.

Do you also ride on the street, or track only?

Marianne: Presently, I only ride on the track. A friend of mine remarked how crazy I was to ride with street plastics on the track. I didn’t understand why at the time but now I get it. So then came race bodywork. After the changes it was simply too much trouble to change my bike back to being street legal so I only rode on track days. I don’t really miss the street at all and that was almost two years ago. Although I do wish that I had a spare bike to putt around occasionally, or to make a quick run to the store. Now my bike just sits on its stands until we are allowed to play again. Although that doesn’t mean I haven’t “tested” set-up changes on the rural backroads around my house.

How did you first get into track days? Do you also race?

Marianne: I had worked pit crew for my boyfriend, Shawn Higbee, for a while during the AMA races until he talked me into going on a trackday during a test. I had no idea that “normal” people could ride on a racetrack until I met him. Of course I wanted to race eventually, but I wanted to be a little faster before I went for it. I took the New Racer’s School in January of 2011 with FastrackRiders (whom I work for part-time) at Autoclub Speedway in Fontana, California. It was my home track so I wanted to be comfortable. Most of my anxiety stemmed from both the practice starts and the mock race we were expected to run. Two of the guys in my class went down right in front of me during two different sessions. Although I watched where the bikes were heading so I knew where to go, it wasn’t really distracting. However, one of the bikes bounced back up after a lowside and then proceeded to ghost ride down the track for a while. I actually had to ride around it. It was surreal. My first race was in Las Vegas about a month after my school. I entered the 20 lap solo and two sprints. Oh. My. God. I cannot tell you how invigorating it was. It’s just me and the bike and that’s all I need at that point. I am truly free when I race. Now, if only I were faster.

Describe how it felt for you to put your bike on the track the very first time.

Marianne: It was intimidating at first but once I learned the track it was all over for me. I was officially addicted. Birthday and Christmas gifts evolved from Tiffanys into race rubber, sprockets, shocks, etc. I soon found out that it was just the beginning. Now I find myself budgeting elsewhere in my life so that I can have things like tires, tire warmers, entry fees and transponders. Oh and a new helmet because the date of manufacture on my Shoei X11 has expired for racing. It never ends.

Current track bike? What made you decide on this model?

Marianne: My current trackbike is a 2006 Honda CBR 600RR with some minor mods. It was my streetbike (which I bought because I liked Hondas at the time and I will admit I liked the orange with tribal flame, I am such a girl). After a few trackdays, we started ripping parts off of it that weren’t necessary and my bike was ultimately set free! However, if I could have any bike (within reason) I would buy an R6. Or at the very least buy a slipper clutch for my Honda. I have had some stupid mishaps (thankfully with no get-offs). Now I think I probably over-blip just to be sure.

If you could hit the track with any racer past or present, who would it be? Why?

Marianne: Although I get to ride with Shawn a lot, and I am lucky to have my own personal coach, mechanic, suspension tech, etc., I would really like to ride with Melissa Paris. I think she is an amazing rider and she doesn’t play the girl card to get ahead. She whips boy-butt fair and square. I really respect that about her. Plus I love her attitude! She gave me some tips before my first race and I will always appreciate that.

Craziest track moment?

Marianne: Hmmm I have two. I was looking for another two seconds so after looking at the data acquisition, it turns out I was shifting a bit early on the straights. I was instructed to ascertain that I was shifting at redline to get more out of the powerband. Basically I was accustomed to banging down a certain amount of gears, so this threw me off. Well, I slammed down one too many coming into Turn 3 and my bike sounded like a 747 landing; my rear was stepping out all over the place. Even though I grabbed the clutch, I still came up out of the seat about a foot. One of my coworkers behind me did the exact same thing right after me, and on the exact same bike! Yeah, I didn’t do that again.

The other was during a solo race. It was near the end of the race and since I had developed a horrible habit a few weekends before of not hanging enough off the bike, my lean angle was pretty severe. I was dragging bodywork, but since I was running slicks it seemed fine (well except for the bodywork I had to keep patching). I was used to scraping the stock pegs occasionally but had just gotten rearsets and never thought I’d drag those. Well, I was leaned over pretty deep in a turn and all of a sudden I hear this AWFUL grinding noise. Everything was in slow motion at this point and I started thinking ‘Uh Oh, I just might lose traction.’ I remember locking eyes with the photographer at the apex and his eyes were as big as plates as he fell back to get away from me. I guess he thought I was going down, too. I remember thinking,’ how do you think I feel, buddy?!’ After looking at the times, I had slowed down by almost two whole seconds for two laps after the incident. But I redeemed myself by running my fastest lap of the weekend on the next (last) lap.

Do you think doing track days affects the way you ride on the streets?

Marianne: Haha, it affects how I drive a car. After a track or race weekend I have found myself instinctively sticking out my elbow and knee when I see a car about to get into my lane It’s a double edged sword though. I have found that I am a much better rider on the street, but I go back and forth from being a street-wuss to pinning it and being stupid. Incidentally, I haven’t been back on the street since I took my trackbike to the store and passed a county sheriff coming the other way. Thankfully, he didn’t even notice.

If you could ride any track in the world, which would it be?

Marianne: Definitely Laguna. I keep saying I am going to do it but I haven’t yet. Although I can’t wait to crest the famous corkscrew, I’ll admit I am a bit nervous about it. Wait, scratch that. DAYTONA, BABY!

We are seeing more women involved in the racing and motorcycle industry, what are your thoughts on this?

Marianne: I think it’s fabulous! I have to admit though I don’t care for the types who have a huge chip on their shoulder like they have to over-compensate for something. But the Danica Patricks of the Motorcycle World are few and far between at least. Most of the women are very encouraging, supportive and helpful. Besides, we need more ladies in the Women’s Class!!

What advice would you give to anyone just starting out on the track or considering it?

Marianne: If you ride motorcycles and you have never been on a racetrack, you are missing out completely. Just get on the track! It will make you a better rider and it’s fun! The track is a very safe place to improve your skills. My advice is to pay attention at the riders’ meeting, take it slow when you first start out and learn the track. You’ll have time to pin it once you become familiar with what your bike (and you) can do. Good tires are paramount when you’re first starting out. If you are not sensitive enough to know when you’re sliding or what to do if you do slide, don’t get on the pipe so hard you can’t pull out of it. Cruddy tires can only make the situation worse. Respect other riders. Don’t freak out when you get passed. It’s going to happen. There will always be someone, somewhere, who will be faster than you are. And as the old saying goes, Stupid Hurts. You’re riding against the clock, not your buddy. It’s not a tryout for a GP ride, you’re there to have fun. Ride safe!
